Religious beliefs, concepts, ethics and practices have shaped up Asian societies and cultures for millennia. They have played a decisive role in charting the course of Asian histories. This module sets out to introduce how religions have influenced the political, social, and economic transformation of Asia over the last several centuries. For example, its main themes include the developments of the three world’s major religions, including Buddhism, Christianity and Islam, in Asian societies, also the significant role of religions in modernization, secularization and democratization in Asian countries. This module enables students to explore these issues from different perspectives of sociology, history, philosophy and religious studies.
