There are approximately 258 million international migrants globally, of which an estimated 40 million live in the Asia and Pacific region and 77.2 million people born in the region are outside of their countries of origin. Asian migration is diverse and complex. This module examines the processes of Asian migration and transnationalism to understand the complexity and dynamic nature of migrants’ lives. Students will study key concepts and theories of migration and identify major Asian migration patterns and processes such as movements to Western countries, labour migration, transnational migration and children. This module discusses the complexity of migrants’ lives in relation to ethnicity, race, class, gender, family and generation.
