The issues of public affairs often have an important philosophical dimension. This module demonstrates that a philosophical examination of these issues can contribute to their clarification and to their resolution. The module introduces a range of views in political philosophy. Students learn the basic notion, meaning, historical roots, and practical significance of some basic political concepts such as justice, liberty and legitimacy through learning the thoughts from different Western and Asian thinkers such as Locke, Rousseau, Rawls, Mencius and Huang Zongxi. In this module, students also learn how to apply these concepts and thoughts in the normative issues of public affairs in Asia. Some examples of these issues include freedom of speech, economic welfare, good governance, and gender inequality, etc.
