This module aims to examine a wide variety of aspects relating to Japanese culture and society. It explores the conceptual foundation of anthropology and how it can be applied in the Japanese context. The module then equips students a deeper understanding of geography, history, drastic demographic change in Japan that formulating group consciousness. The central question of this module is to address how far Japan is different from other cultures and societies through analysing selected ethnographies. Topics such as workplace, gender, family, education, popular culture and otaku, ethnic minority, and religion are discussed in lectures.
