This module puts food and eating into its social contexts. It uses a sociological lens to examine social, cultural, economic, and political aspects of contemporary Asian cuisine and food consumption. By examining what, how, when, with whom people eat as well as where foods come from, the module helps students understand social norms, social institutions, and structure of social relations of Asian societies in relation to colonialism, nationalism and globalisation. Topics include religious and cultural dietary regulations and taboos, food production and consumption system, food politics, social identities and gender role, nutrition and health, and etc.
