This module first introduces students to multidisciplinary approaches (such as historical and cultural perspectives) to major themes in Asian art. Apart from introduction to basic history and theories of art and heritage, this module focuses on the connection between tangible and intangible heritage and their roles in the transformation of Asian societies and cultures. It also explores how art and heritage in Asia are used to establish cultural identities, and create marketable images within a globalized context. The second part of this module introduces students to the origins, functions and practices of museums, especially as part of the Asian colonial legacy. The module compares museums in the Western tradition and Asian contexts, and illustrates the role of museum in modern Asia.
