This module surveys contemporary China through an analysis of the political, social, and economic changes since 1949. We will review the major debates on understanding socialist and post-socialist transformation in China and shall examine the continuities and changes observed in the society under this framework. We will also discuss the problems and challenges China is now facing in the present era. Particular focus will be placed on how these societal changes impact on the lived experience of the Chinese people.
