This module explores the role of emotions in dictatorial and democratic politics. In light of the latest scientific and philosophical researches of emotions, we investigate the following questions: What are political emotions? Is emotion always a hindrance to rational political decision-making? Can emotions such as love and compassion help smooth the functioning of democratic politics and safeguard social justices? By what means do authoritarian governments manipulate emotions such as disgust and shame of the public, and why are these manipulations effective means to maintain their authority? It focuses on critical issues in Asian politics including the transformations from dictatorship to democracy, the formations of civil societies, the violation and preservation of human rights, etc. It also examines the Asian emotions such as Ren (仁), Amae, Fago, and their contributive and destructive influences to societies and political systems.
